Hemispherical omnidirectional gimbaled wheel (HOG wheel) is a hemisphere that spins on its axis, when the hemisphere is vertical, it's just like a spinning top, but by tilting the hemisphere so that one of its sides makes contact with the ground, it can vector torque in any direction near-instantaneously, depending on which side of the hemisphere is in use. So for example, if the hemisphere is spinning clockwise, tilting it so that the right side contacts the ground will "pull" the robot/vehicle forward, with the amount of torque directly proportional to the tilt of the hemisphere, like an infinite gear ratio without any gears. It assumes a single point of contact with the ground, and thus requires a flat, hard floor. This is limiting. A concept illustration of a car with a HOG drive graced the cover of the 1938 edition of ''Mechanics and Handicraft'' magazine.〔(Mechanics And Handicraft (10-1938) )〕 It has been turned into a personal vehicle which won the 1988 Toyota Olympic Ideas competition and ran on perpetually spinning Chinese woks.〔(New Scientist Dec 10, 1988 )〕 Another name for the HOG wheel has been to refer to the system as a 'singularity drive'.
